Neutral Density Filter

Filters are amazing tools that can dramatically change the look and feel of your composition without moving your camera. The images below are good examples of how a Neutral Density Filter can accomplish this. Both of these images were taken within minutes of each other but each has a completely different feel. The first image was shot with a Nikon D300 with a 17-35mm lens @ 24mm for 1/8 second a f/22.

The second image, taken a couple of minutes earlier using the exact same camera, lens and focal length. The only difference in the image is that a B+W 10-Stop Neutral Density filter was added. This filter reduces the amount of light hitting the digital sensor by 10 Stops allowing for much longer exposures. This slowed the shutter speed of this shot to 2 minutes allowing the movement of the clouds to fill the sky creating a more dynamic image.

So the next time your out composing your photo, don’t forget to try a filter for a completely different look. You will be amazed at the difference it will make to your shot.

Monsoon Season

Here in Arizona we are in the middle of monsoon season, also known as second summer. The difference between this and first summer is that first summer is hot and dry. Second summer on the other hand is, well still quite hot but it is also somewhat humid. Rain clouds start forming over the mountains during the day and then the rains come.

This is the time of year for great clouds and colorful sunsets if you can take the heat.

Quinn Images Update – Summer 2011

Recently we moved to Scottsdale Arizona to be closer to the landscapes we love to explore and photograph. The best part about living in Phoenix is that you are a few hours drive from multiple National and State parks that offer an endless variety of photography opportunities.

Last weekend we made a trip west to Joshua Tree National Park. This park is unique in that it is the only National Park that includes both the Mojave desert as well as the Colorado desert, part of the larger Sonoran desert.

Don’t forget the details

Lately I have been focused on finding more intimate landscapes, the small scenes that help create the whole experience. Recently my wife and I stopped at Red Canyon to take some shots of the hoodoos. It nearing sunset and the light was getting really nice. I started wondering around looking for a new angle when I noticed this scene. I almost kept walking but instead I took the time to compose this shot. I am glad that I did take the tim because it turned out to be better than any of the shots I took of the hoodoos.

Colorado Fall Color 2009

I just received my 4×5 transparencies from my trip to Colorado earlier this month. There is nothing like viewing large format transparencies on a lightbox. The detail they can capture is the main reason we still lug these large bulky cameras around.

On that note, if you still shoot film check out AgX Imaging. Michael is very easy to work with and the quality of his work is incredible.

The only down side of this trip was that apparently this year was not as spectacular as years past. The aspen are suffering from what has been called SAD or sudden aspen decline. You can read more about this unfortunate situation here and here.

Even though the aspen are suffering from this issue there was plenty of color to be found and I will be posting my 4×5 images as soon as they are scanned.

In the mean time here is a digital capture from the road to Owl Creek Pass.
